Reading technical drawings with AI: a practical guide
in developmentPublished: Updated: By Chris Ryan, iosys
Short answer
AI can read dimensions, tolerances and title-block fields from scanned drawings and flags uncertain values. In our test on 11 drawing sheets1, two independent passes agreed on 88 percent of the items7; we found 0 dimension reading errors across 248 callouts6. That is agreement, not accuracy. Not yet in customer use19.
What AI reads from a drawing
- Title block (Schriftfeld): drawing number, drawing index (Zeichnungsindex), material, weight, scale.
- Views: dimensions with tolerances, holes, radii, chamfers.
- Margin notes: general tolerance (Allgemeintoleranz), surface symbols, edge symbols, standard references.
- Notes and stamps: inspection characteristics, engravings, handwritten remarks.
Every item comes with its wording, an excerpt from the sheet and a confidence score14. What the AI cannot read with confidence is flagged and goes to your staff.
What we measured
The test used the order documents of one manufacturer.
- Material: 11 drawing sheets1 from 6 order dossiers2.
- Layouts: 7 different title-block layouts3.
- Scans: no text layer, 8 of the 11 sheets scanned sideways4.
- Method: two independent passes per sheet, then a reconciliation that decides every disagreement on an enlarged excerpt.
- Checks: disagreements resolved against the sheet, plus spot checks.
| Check | Result |
|---|---|
| Dimensions read | 2485 |
| Observed dimension reading errors, both passes | 06 |
| Agreement between the two passes | 308 of 349 items, 88 percent7 |
| Spot check of items both passes agreed on | 214 of 233 in order, no failure was a shared misread8 |
| Random audit across all sheets | 33 of 33 items match the sheet9 |
88 percent is not accuracy7. It says how often two independent passes read the same thing. The zero for reading errors applies to dimensions in both passes, checked in the reconciliation and in the spot checks against the sheet.
Worked example: the weight check
A title block states the weight. You can recompute it from the dimensions you read. If it matches, the dimensions were very probably read correctly.
Example with invented values: a POM plate measures 100 × 60 × 8 mm, so its volume is 48 cm³16. At a density of 1.41 g/cm³17 the plate weighs 67.7 g16. The title block says 0.068 kg16: that fits. If it said 0.086 kg16, one dimension was misread, most likely a transposed digit.
Density is a reference value. For critical parts, the supplier's datasheet governs.
General tolerance: what applies when nothing is stated
Dimensions without their own tolerance fall under the general tolerance (Allgemeintoleranz) in the title block, usually per ISO 2768-1. In class medium, the permitted deviation for nominal sizes over 6 to 30 mm is ±0.2 mm18. If the class cannot be read, the tolerance of every dimension without its own is unknown.
Drawings from different customers
- Every customer has its own title block. The test needed one schema and no template per layout14.
- Scans are rendered at 300 dpi; going beyond the scan's native resolution adds no information15.
- A supplier's check marks and notes are inspection remarks, not drawing content. They are recorded separately from the designer's data14.
What shows up when you compare with the order
Reading the drawing together with the order documents finds deviations that the sheet alone does not show. On all 10 ordered parts, the delivery date on the work card differed from the purchase order or the order confirmation12. On 5 parts, the order confirmation's terms weakened requirements of the drawing, for example through ISO 2768-1 medium or fits that were only "aimed for"13.
Limits
- Sample: 11 sheets1 from one manufacturer. This is a test, not a benchmark for arbitrary drawings.
- Single passes: they erred on text, engravings and very small edge symbols, 7 times in pass A and 3 times in pass B10.
- Time: 10 to 25 minutes per sheet and pass11.
- Release: your engineering team approves critical values.
- Status: in development, not yet in customer use19.
Glossary
- Schriftfeld (title block): field, usually bottom right, with drawing number, index, material, weight, scale and approval.
- Zeichnungsindex (drawing index, revision): letter or number for the revision level, with a date. Orders and confirmations often cite it, for example "Index C".
- Allgemeintoleranz (general tolerance): tolerance for all dimensions without their own, usually ISO 2768-1 with classes f, m, c and v.
- Passung (fit): pairing of shaft and bore, for example H7/g6. It sets clearance or interference.
- Prüfmass (inspection dimension): dimension checked in the inspection plan or measurement report. Often marked with a number on the drawing.

Frequently asked questions
How accurate is AI at reading technical drawings?
No single number answers that. In our test on 11 drawing sheets1, we found 0 dimension reading errors across 248 callouts56, through reconciliation and spot checks against the sheet. Two independent passes agreed on 88 percent of the items7. That is agreement between passes, not accuracy.
Do I need a template for each customer's title block?
No. The test used one schema for all 7 title-block layouts3 and no template per layout14. The AI reads the sheet, not a fixed cell position. Every value stays linked to its wording and an excerpt from the sheet, so your staff can check it.
Can AI read scanned drawings with handwriting?
Yes, within limits. The 11 sheets1 were scans without a text layer, 8 of them rotated on the page4. A supplier's check marks and notes are inspection remarks, not drawing content, and are recorded separately14. Single passes erred on text, engravings and very small edge symbols10.
Who checks the results?
Fixed checks flag deviations, and your engineering team approves critical values19. Every value comes with its wording, an excerpt from the sheet and a confidence score14. Where the AI is unsure, that is shown at the value, not hidden in an overall percentage.
How long does reading one sheet take?
In the test, one pass took 10 to 25 minutes per sheet, and reconciling the two passes took another 12 to 25 minutes11. That is not an answer in seconds.
